In A Gadda Da Vidda came up on my playlist, and I couldn’t help but think of this.

A classic to be sure.
In a related aside, I’d be astonished if I ever heard that level of participation in my church.

Yeah, the fake singing by just mouthing the words thing doesn’t really work when the entire congregation has the same idea.

Catholics invented a new level of musical apathy. They don’t even try to fake it. :/

It seems like roughly half will sort of move their lips a little, the other half just stand there and wait for it to end.

Sounds about right. I have to put in a disclaimer here. Even though I’ve been a choir member and a cantor at Mass, I don’t try to sing along if someone doesn’t give me music to an unfamiliar song. If I just get lyrics but no music to something I haven’t heard before, I just sit it out. I like to do it right or not at all.

But, most Catholic churches will pretty much pick from the same group of 5-6 hymns as if the whole rest of the big thick hymnal wasn’t even there, so everyone should pretty much have those memorized by now.

Yes, we mostly have the usual repertoire committed. This only comes up at our evening youth Mass. Right now, we have a really talented gal on guitar. Unfortunately, they only give out a “song sheet” with boring, uninspired tunes that I don’t know. I’d give it a real shot though if I could have the music to sight sing.
I know, I’m being a picky PITA. I try to remind myself what I’m there in church for and to not be cranky.
